I'll give the book one thing; it did manage to shock me on the first page. The bad news is it did so by describing "an America made prosperous" by measures such as banning immigration of Jews and creating a "negro state of Suanee". Yikes.
Now, in the writer's defense, the narrator of the story does turn out to be insane and totally unreliable. And of course the book was written in 1985 (not that the date excuses anything). It's just that, wow. Am I stupid for finding this more disturbing than the "Lethal chamber" mentioned in the story? At least the chambers were only entered voluntarily. Or were they, now I'm suddenly imagining all sorts of unfortunate implications...
So, uh, yeah. Old timey bigotry.
